In this week’s Sunday Prayer, Michelle prays for us to flourish by following Jesus’ example of simple prayer.

Flourishing in the Simple Prayer of Jesus

by Michelle Hieb

Lord, when you walked on earth you gave me an example and said when I pray, not if, but when. It is a command, and I confess I don’t always talk to you first. Mold and change my heart so my first desire is to talk to you, my Father.

Lord, you are my Father and I thank you for the fathers you have placed on earth, who give us a glimpse of your character. Those fathers, and the men who voluntarily step into the role, who lead, provide, and protect in a manner worthy of you.

I look forward to the day when I am united in Heaven with you, and I am grateful you are not confined to one place on this earth, but choose all places.

Your name is Holy, set apart from all other names, may I always remember your name is a blessing and is to be spoken as a blessing.

I subject my life to your rule. May your kingdom work be done on earth as it is done in heaven. May I be an obedient subject today, as the angels in heaven are obedient.

Lord, I thank you for providing for my physical needs today: food to eat, water to drink, and clothes to wear.

Father, I confess that I don’t always forgive easily. Teach me to forgive everyone quickly and completely as You have forgiven me.

Lord, as I follow you, I turn away from temptation and choose you. Lord protect me, those I love, and those who serve this nation from evil. Especially, the evil of suicide that seeks to destroy those you love.

I ask all this because You are the King, the Powerful, and the One to whom all glory is given.

Amen.
