How We’re Learning

by Deb Blackburn

My quiet time is one of my favorite times to listen and hear God, but it isn’t the only time He speaks.

I hear Him when I am having coffee with a friend or while at a church service. This crazy military life doesn’t always allow us to have consistency and we need to find ways to adapt in times of change. If we are PCSing and leaving our church, traveling or hosting others, we sometimes need to be inventive in our pursuit to hear His Word.

My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. Proverbs 2:1-5

How to Hear God through People

  1. Look: It really helps me to have visual reminders! I spend a lot of time on my computer so I have a screensaver (created from the “Downloadable” section of our website–see below) that has scripture and wise reminders from some amazing military women. It is awesome to have random images encouraging me throughout the day. I also love keeping sticky notes in strategic places that have things I am grateful for written on them. Does anyone keep a “thankful list”?
  2. Listen: How do you listen in your everyday? Hearing encouraging words is something that helps me… I love Christian music! It literally changes me from the inside. It can be a video on YouTube, a station on Pandora, or in the car. Do you have a favorite podcast or someone on Periscope who helps you connect? There are so many ways to hear an amazing message.
  3. Learn: I learn amazing things when others share what they are learning. I try to surround myself with people who are seeking Him. Whether it is an amazing blog post, a Bible study, a book, or coffee with a mentor, the words of those seeking God are powerful. Do you have a favorite you could share?
  4. Love: Others, yourself and God. I try to express my love every day. Sometimes this can be hard, but it is worth it! Give someone a compliment, assistance, or a smile. Connect with a friend, in person or on Skype. Love yourself by recognizing your own contributions and strengths. Spend time in prayer and praise.

“Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word about Christ.” Romans 10:17

Your Turn

Hearing God through people is sometimes easy and sometimes… not so easy. Try picking a new technique for a week and see if it works for you!

The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts. Proverbs 20:27

Dear God, Help me hear You. You put people in my life for so many reasons. Thank You for the many ways I can learn from those around me and hear Your Word.
