What does it mean to you? What images come to mind? Do you believe in a just God? When immorality abounds and justice appears to be slow, it can be difficult to feel that God is near.
What kind of injustice do you revile the most? Is it the kidnapping of children? Maybe it is hearing about this person who spent 20 years in jail for a crime he did not commit? Or is it about the reports of children forced into slave labor or girls trapped into prostitution rings?
It seems nowadays that injustice and immorality are rampant. Social media promotes the worst in humanity and we cannot escape it. Like the prophet Habakkuk I sometimes feel like shouting to God “how long”!
Immorality and injustice can have three effects on you:
- you see it so much that it eventually infiltrates your life. Little by little you learn to live with it. Then slowly it becomes the norm and you end up agreeing with it and embracing it.
- The sight of it and the constant reminder become too much. You get angry and refuse to have anything to do with it. You stop watching the news. You unfriend a few people on facebook. Eventually you simply turn off all social media. Whether or not you admit it, you are also a bit angry with God. Where is He? Why is He taking so long?
- You decide to take a stand against injustice and immorality. You remind yourself that even though you are in this world, you are not of this world (Romans 12). You resolve to study God’s truth and follow His precepts. You are not afraid to ask the tough questions and wait for the answers. Your hope is grounded in God.
Habakkuk felt the weight of immorality and injustice. Everywhere he turned, he was witnessing it. Daily. Habakkuk made a stand. Asked. Pleaded. God answered.
“For still the vision awaits its appointed time;
it hastens to the end – it will not lie.
If it seems slow, wait for it;
it will surely come; it will not delay.” Habakkuk 2:3
For the next 12 verses God declares until all doubts are erased that injustice and immorality will not go unpunished. He knows all and sees all. Justice will come.
The truth that we need to take to heart is that justice is awaiting its appointed time. We need to continue to make a stand against it. We cannot ignore it or succumb to it. God’s justice WILL prevail.
Will you continue to make a stand?
“You will not need to fight this battle. Stand firm, hold your position and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf.” 2 Chronicles 20:7
