The True Score

Let’s face it, “truth” is relative. At least it is in much of our society. Everyone has an opinion. And in the name of “freedom,” many have claimed the right to their own version of “truth.” What feels true, or seems true, or even sounds true, claims this sacred ground…so much so that for many, “truth” is no longer something they can even trust.

I get it. We all want to be heard and desire to have our voice land on welcoming ears. We can all attest to the desire for at least some sort of validation. But here’s the thing…what we want isn’t always what we need.

I know, you’ve heard that before. Perhaps you are even deciding right now that reading this post is no longer worth your time. That’s ok. I don’t need you to read this for the real Truth to be just what it is: the TRUTH. It doesn’t need to count “likes” or “hearts.” It just is what it is – and it’s always been.

It’s not even my truth that I am heralding. It belongs to me, and I certainly own it. But THIS TRUTH is different. It didn’t start with me, and it won’t end with me or even with you. It already is. It already has been. And it will always be Truth.

To be honest, though, I must confess I can’t get my brain around the gravity of this Truth. Believe me, I try. I am trying still. Every day and every step pressing in to walk in it. To live it. To trust it. To be renewed in it.

“So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are His child, God has made you also an heir.”

Galations 4:7

What? Read that again. I mean, really read it.

An heir. A family. A belonging. A power. His child… wow.

None of these things originate with me and they didn’t originate with you, either. We didn’t earn this belonging. We didn’t strive hard enough, love deep enough, walk straight enough, get-our-act-together-enough for this Truth to be bumper-stickered across our foreheads, or more importantly, our hearts.

Nope. All we did was say, “Yes.” Yes to an invitation we didn’t deserve. Now, if that doesn’t contradict the relativism and “truths” of this world, I don’t know what does.

So today, when you take a long look in the mirror and feel tempted to recite “truths” that don’t actually belong to you, do yourself a favor and don’t.

Words are powerful. Don’t speak something over yourself that doesn’t belong to you.

Clothe yourself in the only Truth that was ever designed to truly fit. You are an heir of the Kingdom and a Child of the One True God. And you know what? This Truth that is yours is strong enough, bold enough, trustworthy enough, beautiful enough, and full enough to actually be enough for all those spaces that don’t feel like enough. THAT is the Truth.

So this score that you have carried that just never quite seems to make it into the black…isn’t actually the True score. This sense that you don’t or can’t measure up is just not True. Why? How? Because, just like you didn’t save yourself from your sins, you don’t hold the cards to your worth either. What He gives you isn’t earned or even deserved. When you give your life to Jesus, your score is settled. Your future is written. Your inheritance is secure.

“Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of His purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, He confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

Hebrews 6:17-19

We have this Truth as an anchor for the soul, friends. This freedom, this anchor, is what gives us power and freedom! Not in and of ourselves (so that no one can boast), but in HIM who settled the score once and for all. This TRUTH is the only score we need to track. This TRUTH is the only one that matters.

The song I want to share with you today is new from beloved worship leader Chris Tomlin, entitled, “Resurrection Power.” Such a great song – and Truth – to sing over yourself. So go ahead and look in that mirror, and sing it out loud, reminding yourself of the True score that belongs to you today!  HINT: Watch the video ALL THE WAY to the end. Hope it brings a smile to your face like it did mine.

With joy for the journey,

Sarah
