Nothing Is Wasted

Written by Missy Wainman
Pianist, vocalist for the Planting Roots Worship Team

I am an all or nothing girl.

I’m either in or out. Feet first or not at all. I don’t do anything half-way. If I can’t finish something, then I don’t start it. I’ve been this way all my life.

I’ve been playing piano since I was 9. I grew up in a musical home – both my sisters were pianists and vocalists. When I hit high school, I realized that music was in my blood and there was nothing else I wanted to do. I have a Bachelor of Music degree with a Vocal concentration. I wanted to move to New York and sing at the Metropolitan Opera House, but instead I taught Elementary Music for 10 years. No matter how you spell it out…I just love to sing and play piano. It’s what I was meant to do.

I have been a good church girl all my life – sang in the choir, belted out timeless hymns, even harmonized occasionally to the dismay of those around me (I’d sing the tenor part an octave higher). But I never grasped the depth of meaning of the words I was singing until we moved to our first duty station – Fort Stewart, GA.

We were fresh out of the Chaplain basic course and I had been introduced to PWOC by my first Army wife friend. It was there, surrounded by military women who loved the Lord, that I heard worship music I’d never heard before, sung with such passion and conviction. I didn’t know that worship could be so sweet. Yeah, I’d sung “I could sing of Your love forever” for…well, forever…but it didn’t resonate with me then like it did when worshiping with these women. I began to understand (and even crave) pure, holy worship through music.

After Fort Stewart, we moved to Fort Benning, GA. Yup, just across the state – I’d so wanted to have more of an adventure. We’re in the Army – we’re supposed to see the world! But God had a plan for me. A plan far better than I could have imagined.

I stumbled into playing piano at Benning quite by accident, but it was there that I began to really understand and learn to worship. I was able to accompany many different services with differing styles of music. I learned how to play in a band, how to follow the worship leader, and how to be humble while playing. Yes, for this musician, learning humility was definitely a hard one to learn, but so needed. It freed me to worship unashamedly.

There is such freedom in being able to worship not only through singing, but also in playing. It’s a whole body experience for me. I am all in when I worship. I am totally aware of what is going on around me musically, but worshiping God is my main focus.

However, these last few months have been very dry. My husband is currently deployed and raising 2 young boys (8 & 6) by myself, homeschooling both (one with special needs), makes me weary. My worship has been dry. My quiet time has been dry. Depression has been thick and dark. There are days when I’m thankful that I can say we are all in one piece and have eaten that day. Worship has been last on my list.

I’ve been struggling with pride, girls. Oh, you too?

Well, then you know that the time spent in feeling sorry for ourselves and wallowing in pity is time wasted. Feeling unloved, unworthy, misunderstood, ugly, forgotten…it’s all lies. Satan uses these things to draw us away from our Source of worth. Our Source of love. Our Source of strength. It’s so easy to listen to the lies, isn’t it?

But even in our dry times, even in the times when everything seems wrong and nothing…NOTHING…will make it right, God will use those times for His glory. Nothing is wasted. Not even our hardest days. Not even the days of depression. Nothing is wasted.

I was reminded of this while driving to Awana with my boys tonight. The song “Nothing is Wasted” by Elevation Worship was playing. I hadn’t even chosen that album, much less that song to listen to in the car. I’d like to say that it was a fluke, but I fully believe that GOD chose that song for me to hear tonight. He was reminding me that nothing is wasted where I am concerned. The pain. The brokenness. The heartache. The loneliness. NOTHING is wasted. He can use all things for His good. It’s my job to continue to worship Him, even in these times.

Piano playing

So, as you see me sitting at the piano, I pray that you will seek God through your worship. I pray that if you are dealing with some of the same things I’ve mentioned, you will feel confident that ALL things work for God’s good. I pray that I may be a reminder to you that you are loved and nothing in your life is wasted.

“You are loving, You are wise
There is nothing in my life You cannot revive
You are loving, You are wise
There is nothing too hard for our God.
Nothing is wasted
You work all things for good
Nothing is wasted
Your promise remains
Forever You reign.”

To God be the Glory,
