In this week’s Worship Wednesday post, Claudia shares with us how she learned that God provides our cover during battles in our everyday lives.

God Provides Our Cover During Battles

by Claudia Duff

cover verb

cov·er | \ ˈkə-vər  \

to guard from attack; to afford protection or security to

I have been married for 33 years and there is still an issue with cover in our marriage. It is totally a first world issue, but it bugs me, girlfriends. Here it is, I am short sheeted every single night.

I have tried comforters, quilts, blankets you name it I have tried it and at the end of every night when dawn breaks, I am uncovered in some fashion or another. I suspect the real issue is that my husband is a full 12 inches taller than I am. That’s significant when trying to share a cover, it’s not enough and somehow too much all at the same time; not enough cover and more than enough husband.

Do you ever feel like that in a spiritual sense?

Like there is just not enough cover for your heart, soul, and mind? That the daily struggle of the circumstances we face are just about 12 inches taller than we can reach? I do. I feel this constant struggle in a push and pull sort of way. But, we have a God who has promised to cover us, all of us.

“He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.”

Psalm 91:4 ESV

As I navigate day to day living, the Psalms are a constant source of courage and hope. God has made His purpose clear, he is here for us, all of us, every time we need him. In this verse, we see God has promised his faithfulness and not only for us to rest in, but as an offensive weapon and a place of strength. The shield is used to defend and buckler provides the strength needed to stand in the presence of an enemy. That’s a big, big God and his faithfulness is fierce.

Make a Plan for Your Cover

As women associated with the military community, we understand the requirement for cover in an attack. Your battle buddy provides cover as you advance, retreat, or stand your ground. A battle is loud, dangerous and fierce, leaving no room for discussion about what should happen next. You need a plan before the battle begins to make it out alive and bring all of your battle buddies with you.

What about you, saint? Do you have a plan for your daily battle?

I keep this thought in mind as I approach each day, “the enemy of my soul hates me, my husband, my kids, my grandkids, my dog, and even my cat.” This is a true statement, not meant to elevate the enemy, but rather to make the battle lines clear and encourage me to take the fight right up to heaven’s gates.

Seek God’s Cover

If you know anything about me, you know I love hard. I love the people in my life and I am good with you until you start messing with my people. Then we got problems in river city. Big, big problems.

A sweet friend often said, “I’m on Claudia’s team, always!” As much as I love my people and will fight for them, God loves them better, greater, and with an unrivaled strength. I love hard but, my God loves the hardest. I need His covering above all else.

“Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven; whose sin is covered.”

Psalm 32:1 ESV

The greatest covering is the shed blood of Christ that covers our sin. It washes us white, clean and pure. This covering is what we rest in for eternity. We should never cease testifying of its amazing miracle. We are made new in Christ, never to be the same.

I have shared a link to a worship song that has become somewhat of a battle cry for my heart. The first time I heard it I was sitting in church next to my sweet daughter-in-love, Megan. The words hit me full force, and I got it. It resonated with my heart in a single beat. I pray that listening to the words reminds you that you have a God who will come for you. He will come in any situation, any location, and he will come in force. There will be some breaking, beating, and crashing when he comes. What a marvelous thought! A God who comes for you in such a way that everyone will see just how great he truly is! That’s the kind of God I want! I want to be covered by a God who does it all!

Covered by a good God!

I pray this sone, “Cover The Earth “by Cody Carnes, Kari Jobe will inspire you to seek God’s cover when you’re faced with battles that leave you feeling exposed.
